digital photography question

I have read that what's called "resolution" in advertisements for digital cameras ("7.1 megapixel resolution") is really just size. I infer from this that just changing the dimensions of a picture shouldn't change the dpi. Unless I set the camera to a lower image quality, it should be taking pictures at the same dpi, regardless of the dimensions. Right? Is that insane? So, should I take pictures at approximately the size that I'm going to end up using them online? If I take pictures at the biggest size and then shrink them, am I losing information?
