I think of "Rock On", "Chuck E.'s in Love", and "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" as a set: spare, slow, odd but groovy rhythms, underplaying their effects, and simple but expressive vocals; they all seem to me like longshots as hit singles, but they all were.

I learned that Chuck E. was one of the KFML announcers, KFML being the great proto-underground station in Denver where I used to hear Firesign Theatre and stuff. I learned this when I found a web site with mp3s of station promos, a station history, and photos of the announcers I never saw. It's an interesting bit of trivia, but it still won't make me listen to that singer.

Awwww, I like Rickie Lee Jones! I didn't like her when I was a teenager, though. And I hated "Sultans of Swing". Besides the stupid title, I think there was a kind of laid-back, cool groove I was allergic to.
