Every time I proofread the computer security brochure that features large pictures of machines and the prominent headline "Serve and Protect", I shudder.

I just went to Amazon.com and it looks like Williamson's novel THE HUMANOIDS is OP. (that is the reference, right?) I read it ages ago, and have forgotten a lot of the details, but do remember vividly how powerfully affected I was by it.

The Humanoids, yes; though what I know best is the novella that preceded it, "With Folded Hands".

"To serve and protect, and keep men from harm."

I don't think I've read the novella.

"With Folded Hands" is one of the earliest science fiction stories I read, because it's in the second volume of The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and that was probably the first book of adult science fiction I read after The Hugo Winners.
