I am stunned, but in retrospect, not surprised. His writings always seemed to me to have almost a first-hand understanding of depression.
But I am still very shaken by this.

I agree, sadly. I was somehow both surprised and unsurprised. One of the threads in Infinite Jest involved a suicide, as I remember.
Tragic.
