parlando playlist #21: halfnelson [sparks] - fletcher honorama (1971)

Halfnelson was Sparks, early on. They recorded one album as Halfnelson (eponymously), and then changed their name to Sparks, including their first album retroactively. Todd Rundgren produced Halfnelson; like Rundgren's own work, Halfnelson was issued on Bearsville (Albert Grossman's label).

"Fletcher Honorama" is a sublime pop song*. That is all.

I don't know a lot about Sparks, but that sounded like Love with a piano part on loan from "Something in the Air." Which is not a bad combo.

Sparks are all over the map. Early Sparks (i.e., Halfnelson) sometimes feel like pop-psychedelic -- if that means anything. If it does, that's Love.

I have a semi-famous bootleg when Halfnelson was shopping their wares (about 1968) and finding no takers. It's very good, and it has ten songs that Sparks ended up never using. Anyway, it sounded like they were very influenced at the time by Syd Barrett.
