parlando playlist #33: mia doi todd - can i? [2001]

From Zeroone, her third album, self-released. Her fourth album, The Golden State, was released by Columbia, and produced by Mitchell Froom; four songs were re-recorded from Zeroone (though not "Can I?"). Zeroone was just acoustic guitar and voice, and The Golden State was, well, produced by Mitchell Froom. Mia Doi Todd's four fans were outraged. (I thought it was a weird choice, but I didn't know what Todd's [Doi Todd's?] thoughts were. Anyway, she didn't go back to Froom [and retreated {?} to indiedom] but she didn't go back to acoustic guitar and vocals, either.)

I think I first heard of her through John Darnielle's blog (he's got good, eclectic taste). Anyway, I didn't =dislike= that, but I have no clue why it's as long as it is. It feels like it'd be just as good at three and a half minutes.

A few people say that about that song when I play it. I think it varies enough, and every part is fascinating, but if any part didn't fascinate, I'd think I know what you mean.

I just wrote a comment to you mentioning John Darnielle in a different context. I forgot Darnielle's blog a few years ago -- I forget lots of things, good and bad -- but when I read it it mostly seemed to be intelligent considerations of thrash (are other newer adjectives) metal bands. (Which I am curious about, and have been getting into in the last eight years.)

I think he's pretty much abandoned that blog. The thrash advocacy was one of many phases he went through on it; it also happened to be the last one.

("and retreated to indiedom" is fine, although it scans just a little clunky. If I were writing that sentence, I'd substitute "retreating to indiedom instead.")

Ah, thank you. (The "?" after "retreated" was acknowledgment for some people's opinion that it was not a retreat, but where she should be all along. A triumph return to indiedom. Or something.)

Yeah, I was at the blog when it looked like it was dying.
