parlando playlist #41: culture - i'm not ashamed [1977]

Culture's Two Sevens Clash is my favorite reggae album, and taught me how to appreciate reggae. (I had a few reggae albums that I liked, even in my twenties -- notably Black Uhuru's Red -- but Two Sevens Clash pushed me to look further.) "I'm Not Ashamed" is the last track on the first side*.

*the first CD of Two Sevens Clash, and the only CD for nearly twenty years (on the Shanachie label), reversed the sides, so I thought "I'm Not Ashamed" was the last song. Finally Shanachie got it right for the 30th Anniversary edition.

That is good. I should go back and listen to it again.

That album made a big impression on me in my youth, not for the music, but for being the first time I had seen Xgau give an A+ in the pages of the Village Voice. (So it was then a disappointment when I didn't fall in love with it.)

I forgot about that! I do remember that he gave Black Uhuru's Red a, what? A B+ or an A-? Now I don't remember! My memory.... Anyway, it was a good review, but I scowled. (But I was astonished when I realized he hated Magazine. That was when I knew he was no consumer guide for me.)
