Another emergency Parlando Playlist post: again a teenage favorite.

This Heat was multi-instrumentalists Charles Hayward (I know* him as the drummer from Phil Manzanera's Quiet Sun, and the later Massacre -- not the metal Massacre but the Fred Frith/Bill Laswell Massacre), Charles Bullen, and Gareth Williams. "Health and Efficency" was a single on Piano Records.

A =single=? I mean, it's fine that this jazzish thing isn't quite my taste, but I'm honestly baffled by the decision to release it as a single. Was that a budget-motivated choice, or did they have hopes of cracking the pop charts?

In the wilds of Experimental Rock and Art Rock -- Semi-Popular Music, as Chris Cutler of Henry Cow put it --- especially in the eighties, singles were issued in batches of (say) 500, usually songs that weren't on albums. (In that way, like England.) Like hardcore punk, too; lots of singles. Definitely different from pop singles for playing on radio.

In other words, I don't think they had a hope of cracking the pop charts -- but in 1980 in England, you never knew. And this song is well known to this day, in a small but fierce way. It has a (small) Wikipedia entry.
