Edwyn Collins was a songwriter and singer in the eighties with the band Orange Juice ("Rip It Up"), and thereafter solo ("A Girl Like You", "The Magic Piper of Love"). He is still singing, putting out his eighth album in 2013.

His fifth album, issued in 2002, was Doctor Syntax. The fifth song on the fifth album was "The Beatles".

Has the Playlist gone on hiatus, or are you just waiting for me to catch up?

Neither. I'm definitely not waiting for you to catch up (though it did occur to me that you might be worried about my noticing you falling a bit behind and therefore you probably want me to go ahead, don't worry if you leave a few unlistened-to [right?]).

It's not on (deliberate) hiatus, but I'm going though ruminations on what should PP be. Mostly, I've discovered while I wanted PP to be a representative sample of what I listened to, in fact PP is a gentler, more friendly, more accessible.... it was conscious of an audience. Too much conscious.

It will be back very soon.

I'm enjoying listening to them in order, so my only request is that you not delete the links until I've gotten to the song.

As you may have noticed, I often listen to several in a row and then get busy with other stuff for a day or three.

It's been a fascinating tour of your record collection--even though I don't love everything, I've enjoyed a lot of it and much of it has been new to me.

I've noticed! Happily.

And thank you. It's going to get a little more... weird? Ugly, some might say, though I don't think so. Anyway, that's a sliver of my taste.

Another vote for less accessible, why not?

"There's three of us but we're not the Beatles" -- Run-D.M.C.

I like this: more for the lyrics, which are nicely cryptic but sardonic and ultimately creepy, than for the music, which is fine but forgettable. I wonder how the song would play if he had made it sound more Beatlesque?

Oh, I really like the music. To me, it's slow and creepy, a match with the lyrics.

I think it works, but the lyrics are what carry the song.
