parlando playlist #81: christine collister - free will and testament [1998]

Christine Collister is a Manx (as in from the Isle of Man) singer, mostly a covers singer, like a jazz singer, except she's mostly draws from pop/rock. She has a beautiful low, full voice, with no showy melisma-laden i'm-a-diva anything.

She came up in the eighties, with five albums with Clive Gregson, and backup singer on several albums with Richard Thompson. Since then she's done six or seven solo albums; the third one, The Dark Gift of Time, is my favorite, though all of them have a good selection of covers (no obvious ones, sometimes a surprise). "Free Will and Testament" (from The Dark Gift of Time) was written by Robert Wyatt (originally from his Shleep album).

I listened to this a few times--at first, it kept slipping out of my field of vision (or the auditory equivalent). But I think it's actually really good--I like both her voice and the arrangement a lot.

I like that you listened to it a few times. I think the arrangements are very good and grow on, well, me anyway.
