I had this EP, and I heard it on the radio, even though it never placed in the charts (at least, I don't think so). Probably because there were briefly new wave stations in Seattle, and I eagerly listened to them.

It was a little bit of a national sort-of hit*, because it was on I.R.S. (i.e., Miles Copeland's label). And it was a permanent sort-of hit, because it was picked up by Rhino's I Just Can't Get Enough (#3) new wave many-CDs compilations. Still, if you haven't got that compilation series, you probably haven't heard it, unless you were paying attention to new wave radio in 1980.

I like it for the very simple hook, with the rising-pitch vocal on "city" and same time one repeated note on guitar (essentially; then the guitar plays another note repeatedly, and eventually turns into a guitar solo, which figures).

* I mean it was not a regional hit. It was certainly not a hit, however.

That's practically the archetype of 1980 new wave.

Ain't it?

I have that Rhino comp, although this never jumped out at me. But this is good stuff, and the spoken-word bit about rock 'n' roll reminds me of Art Brut.
