Man, that sounds nothing like Meat Loaf!

I know very little about Wyatt and Soft Machine--what do you recommend as an entry point?

Actually, I don't know much Soft Machine; what I've heard sounds like they're sorta Canterbury-prog, which I like but not sends-me-down-their-path. I should check them out more. I know better Matching Mole, Wyatt's transition band to solo. (Cheerful Canterbury-prog, which laugh-out-loud moments.)

Robert Wyatt's place to start is Rock Bottom, recorded when he recovered after he fell out of a five-story window and broke his spine. It's absolutely beautiful.
