I can't believe that you didn't make it to 52.

I am so sorry she didn't make it to 52. I am going to her service tonight, mentally kicking and screaming because I still don't want to accept it. Tonight we should be celebrating, not mourning.

Hugs, love and best wishes always.

I didn't really know Velma, and so I wondered whether it was appropriate for me to go the NY memorial -- don't want to be a character in a Chuck Palahniuk novel, after all.

But I'm glad I was able to go because I felt moved to speak, and what I spoke about was what an extraordinarily fine writer she was -- since that's the context in which I knew her.

Not just a fine writer but someone who's outlook and life experiences made her unique.

I'd love to see her writings edited and published. There's a brilliant memoir there, through which Velma could touch other people's lives (as she touched mine.)
