99 albums

Inspired by a post by gybefan2000 on livejournal, I have laboriously made a list of my favorite albums for the last fifty years (1956-2005). I've listed one album per year from 1956 to 1964; after that, two albums per year, one of them roughly from English-language pop/rock, and one roughly from everything else. That comes to 91 albums, so I have then added eight albums that were agony to leave off. Note that this still doesn't come close to being my favorite 99 albums: there are years that are chockablock with great albums (1974, 1978, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 -- roughly every five years, huh!), and there are years where it's a struggle to name two. The most recent five years are particularly tentative: I still have heard only a fraction of the recent albums that have an enthusiastic following, and I probably haven't heard your favorite. Sometimes a favorite musician is represented here by an album that is not actually my favorite of theirs (Captain Beefheart, Joni Mitchell, John Coltrane, Steely Dan, the Pixies). Organizing it by year in this fashion is fairly arbitrary; but it's a neat way to come up with 99 albums spread over the last half century. Repackages of old material are only allowed if they collect material not previously available on an album; thus, no conventional greatest hits albums.

Eventually I will fill these out to ten favorites from each year. For now, though, here are ninety-nine:

amazing list!

It is funny to look back at the list now and see how many of those bands you introduced me to or made me reconsider: spoon, quasi, etc.

New here, but very interesting effort. Must look into some of your choices. Inevitably for every human there'll be quibbles. The ones to leap to my humble mind'd be The Stone Roses album and My Bloody Valentine of latter times, though I'm in ignorance of many of your choices so who knows. I'd be of a more electronic or spacey bent perhaps overall but an impressive elegant post.

Welcome!

If I were making a more objective list, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless would be on it. Unfortunately for me, I just can't stand it. I try anew every few years, and I seem to be deaf to its virtues.

The Stone Roses are a different sort of case. I have that album, and I like it, but I've never understood what all the excitement is about. It sounds like a good ordinary rock album to me.

I'd be interested to hear more of your choices, or a whole list. Cheers.

I don't think I have a hugely eclectic knowledge or unfortunately the discipline to go thru the whole 2 albums per year thing. So for now I'll just shoot off a load of albums
Lots of Beatles, special mentions to Revolver & Magical Mystery Tour.
Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates,
Velvet U & Nico,
Notorious Byrd Brothers,
Nick Drake's Pink Moon & Five Leaves Left
Bowie's Low & Heroes
Kraftwerk's Man Machine & Computer World
KLF Chillout
Primal Scream Screamadelica
Orb's Adventures Beyond Ultraworld
Spiritualised- Pure Phase
Underworld- Dubnobasswithmyheadman
Aphex Twin-Selected Ambient 1 & 2
Stina Nordenstam-And She CLosed Her Eyes
Susumu Yokota- Perhaps "Boy & The Tree" or "Grinning Cat"
The Las- The Las

I have and enjoy the Byrds, Bowie, and Underworld albums on your list.

You've definitely got the spacy/psych/sound-over-song thing going on more than I do. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space is another album beloved of my friends that I never got my head around, for example. (I know it's not on the list you just gave, but I'm guessing you like it.)

The La's comes very close to making my list. Once upon a time I said there were two kinds of indie-music heads: those who were waiting forever for another My Bloody Valentine album, and those who were waiting forever for another La's album. (Though it looks like you're on both lists.)

Yeah, bith sides of the coin with MBV and The La's. Saw the Las on their surprise tour 18 months or so ago, and was blown away. I knew Looking Glass from the album and think it's one of the most incredible songs I've ever heard, but hadn't checked out the album for some reason. The kind of album you think after a couple of listens is good, but what's the big deal. A day or so alter and I found myself to be addicted. They recently released a BBC live album from way back I must get, but an awful shame Lee Mavers didn't get it together to pour forth more of his genius.
As for Spiritualised, yeah, in general i liked their 1st 3 albums, and in paricular the first song off Ladies & G is superb, but I think there's a bit more structure to Pure Phase that appeals to me. On similar lines I liked the Sigur Ros stuff quite a lot initially but now I find it's a bit too Lets jam and see what comes out, which ends up a bit samey after a while. I've become more of a believer in the self-contained individual art-work, rather than lets play and see what arises. For that reason not sure what I'd make of now of the Orb album I mentioned which I loved at the time.

"both sides"..must start checking what I've written before posting. Don't know what impatient psychological quirk makes me never learn.
