about the Song Project

In December 2006, I embarked on a project to write posts about a thousand good songs. Some of them are obscure songs I think people should know about; some of them are songs almost everyone already knows. They come from a variety of genres and styles and periods. The only thing they have in common is that I like them and think I have something to say about them. They're not my favorite thousand songs, and aren't intended to make an overall argument about anything. It's an exercise in thinking about why I like what I like. I'd be delighted if other folks joined in.

In particular, I would be delighted if people with technical expertise will lend their knowledge when I am struggling with explaining technical things. I don't have the vocabulary, and it's one of the biggest challenges in trying to write this stuff. Please don't be afraid to correct me!

Each post includes (at least initially) a link to an mp3 of the song being discussed. I hope that if people like the song, they will consider buying from the musicians, assuming the music is available. Please let me know if you are the musician or the holder of the rights and would like the link removed. I don't want to trample anyone's rights, just to help other people find music and musicians I love.

The Song Project is updated at least twice a week.*
